While the cold of winter still remains in the village, the townspeople and volunteers work together to re-thatch the roofs of the houses in the village.
At long last the snows of winter have melted, adding to the volume of water in the Sho River. The scenery is also in a state of flux, as the white of winter snows is replaced first by the soft brown of fresh earth and then by the bright green of new leaves.

Rice paddies brimming with verdant waters appear as a carpet of green.
During the Obon holiday, the townsfolk busy themselves with cleaning and visiting of graves of deceased family members as a way to welcome their spirits back to the land of the living. But the thing that the villagers look forward the most to is, of course, the Obon festival. Long ago, the villagers had few opportunities to enjoy themselves and that’s no doubt the reason why this festival is so highly anticipated. |

The Doburoku Festival is held in autumn to celebrate a good harvest and peace in the village. Soon after the festival is finished, the people of the village begin to prepare for winter. Firewood is stacked up under the eaves of the houses, and, in an effort to protect the walls and entryways of houses from the snow, screens made from a thatch called odare are erected around the houses. |

Winter comes quickly to Shirakawa Village. A product of the long, quiet winters here is the birth of the special light-up ceremony.
The image of Ogimachi Village rises out of the darkness. The beauty of this sight flows like the blissful feeling of a fantastic, never-ending dream.

For dinner, guests are treated to the traditional fare of a mountain village, prepared on an open hearth. We’re sure our offering of Hida beef, fish from local rivers and traditional winter cuisine of bear stew will make your mouth water.
